Advanced Choirs

Cantabella

Historically, Cantabella is Young Voices of Colorado’s oldest performing ensemble forming the core of our identity in guest appearances, collaborations, festivals and travel. Choir membership is open to female singers in at least sixth grade. Their choral training requires greater responsibility and commitment.

The choir serves as host choir for our Young Voices’ Sing A Mile High International Children’s Choral Festival in late June.

How can we explain how cool it is to be in Cantabella? Singers attend a brief “boot camp” for a couple of days in the summer to make sure they understand the level of work that is expected. All year they work on fabulous music for two main concerts and Sing A Mile High Children’s International Choral Festival! Four days of “Extraordinary Music and Fabulous Fun!” Cantabella Singers are also eligible for international tours.

Becoming a member of Cantabella requires a full year’s commitment.

Singer should be able to:

  • Match pitch with good intonation (in-tune) in the treble range
  • Know the lines and spaces of the extended treble staff (ledger lines)
  • Perform basic rhythmic patterns in simple (4/4) and complete (6/8) meter
  • Sight-read more advanced musical patterns
  • Identify key signatures
  • Identify solfege syllables
  • Sing a part alone while another singer sings a different part
  • Cooperate significantly within the choral rehearsal
  • Attend rehearsals and performances including Sing A Mile High, putting the needs of the ensemble first

During rehearsals we focus on:

  • Producing a beautiful pure sound with proper breath support
  • Singing with precise intonation (in-tune) in four our more parts
  • Improving vocal technique
  • Nuances of blend and balance
  • Sight-reading in solfege in various keys, with some accidentals
  • Part-singing in two to four parts or more
  • Performance etiquette
  • Independent musicianship, including “homework” learning new music
  • Musical leadership within the ensemble
  • Musical and community leadership for Sing A Mile High
  • Becoming a unified group in musical sound and in spirit
